Dear Colleague,

I am now writing to invite you to check out Culture and Development on the
new Development Gateway which is to be officially launched on 30 July
2001 after more than a year's development work: you will find this at:

        http://developmentgateway.org/topic/?page_id=3639

Over the past 12 months the Development Gateway has been building up with
the aim of promoting the exchange of knowledge on a wide range of topics.
These include six Web "pages" on Culture and Development in general and on
five related sub-topics (Arts, Crafts and Media; Cultural Management;
Cultural Policy; Cultural Tourism; and Heritage Preservation - including
museums and conservation issues and projects with a development
orientation or component).

Even before the official "launch" of the Development Gateway at the end of
July its Culture and Development area already contains over 440 items
such as articles, policy documents, case studies, details of organisations
etc.

When you try out the Culture and Development home page, I would also
encourage you to click on "Join this community" at top right of the
opening screen. Just complete the quick registration procedure and you
will then be informed whenever new content is added to the main Culture
and Development page and/or any sub-topic(s) of special interest to you.

(Alternatively, you always can enter Culture & Development via the main
Gateway entry point:

        http://developmentgateway.org/

I have also reproduced a brief summary of "Our Focus" as a short Rich Text
Format attachment to this message: Our-Focus.rtf).

Also, if you have a minute do try out the other features on the site and
let me know what you think. In particular I think you will find our
project database, listing over 300,000 development projects by sector,
country, agency, and status, to be very helpful. You will find this at:

        http://developmentgateway.org/idml/ui?sector=42&topOrSec=t

Meanwhile I wish you well with your own work in this area. If you have
articles, links, information about your own organisations, projects or
research, or other content on the subject of Culture and Development or
its sub-topics, we would be delighted to have you post a link on our site
by clicking on "Add content", and thereby draw more attention to your
work and share your expertise and understanding of issues with the wider
community.

Another important feature is the possibility of entering into debates
about such issues through the "Ask the Community" facility link on every
topic page.

If you would like to know more about the Gateway, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

Also, please feel free to circulate this note among your colleagues.

Yours sincerely

On the other hand, improved cultural awareness and education can equally well contribute to peace and reconciliation. }{\fs24 \par} \pard\plain \intbl\sb100\sa100\fs24 {\fs24 The joint United Nations/UNESCO World Commission on Culture and Development, chaired by former UN }{\fs24 Secretary-General}{\fs24 }{\fs24 Javier}{\fs24 }{\fs24 Perez}{\fs24 de }{\fs24 Cueller,}{\fs24 has researched extensively both the current and potential role of cultural activities and resources on economic, social and education development and has stressed the already great, and rapidly growing, importance of culture within development plans and projects. }{\fs24 \par} \pard\plain \intbl\sb100\sa100\fs24 {\fs24 Many national governments and development organisations, have also recognised this and seek to ensure that the cultural impact and potential are now considered alongside other established development criteria such as economics and environmental impact. Many international and national development and funding agencies and foundations, such as the Dutch, French, }{\fs24 Japonese}{\fs24 and Swedish development ministries or agencies and the Ford Foundation and the John Paul }{\fs24 Getty}{\fs24 Trust among hundreds of others, have also supported a wide range of developing countries in development projects with a cultural dimension, whether at the experimental and demonstration project level, or as substantive development schemes. }{\fs24 \par} \pard\plain \intbl\sb100\sa100\fs24 {\fs24 Within the more specifically economic sphere, it is now widely recognised that the creative and cultural industries, are one of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the world economy and trade, and the benefits of the global expansion of recent years in this field is no longer confined to so-called developed countries. Some developing countries are rapidly becoming major world players in the sector, while traditional cultural economic activities such as craft production and marketing are rapidly expanding, and being put only a more structured economic basis in some of the least developed countries. }{\fs24 \par} \pard\plain \intbl\sb100\sa100\fs24 {\fs24 Even more important overall is the explosive growth in cultural tourism focussed in particular on countries and cities with a rich and well-preserved cultural heritage, with the result that there are already several developing countries, such as Egypt, in which cultural tourism is already amongst the top two or three areas of the economy in terms of international trade. }{\fs24 \par} \pard\plain \intbl\sb100\sa100\fs24 {\fs24 The widespread and growing interest ion these areas is also demonstrated by the ever increasing numbers of specialist advanced cultural policy and cultural management training programmes, the rapid expansion in recent years of the numbers of specialised professionals in }{\fs24 the field, and of international organisations and discussion groups for practitioners and academics working in these areas. For example, Culture and Development Internet discussion group }{\fs24 (CHDEV-L)}{\fs24 established in 1998 as a direct result of a World Bank conference on cultural heritage and development, now has nearly 300 members around the world.
