It's not an answer, and I am quite sure that there is on single answer
to the problem of the public's perception of museums.
For several years I taught tin smithing at the Rochester Museum and
Science Center. My class was always full and a good percentage of the
class asked for an advanced class.
The museum had no problem with my beginning class, even though it meant
mine was the earliest to start and the last to finish on that day. 8:00
AM to 5:00 PM for which I was paid the handsome sum of $60.00 ( most
were paid $30.00 but my class was considered a double.)
The museum could never bring it's self to accept my advanced course,
because the participants would not be taking a " Thing" home.
The other request my students had was to have the course over two days
rather then just the one Saturday.
For me to teach required bringing a large amount of tools from my own
shop and breaking down my own work over the course of several weeks is
just not possible. I could work over a weekend, but the Science did not
operate on Sundays.
Surely my one class in tin work is not going to change the income of
the museum. But enough such courses over a long enough time could have a
positive influence.
But it would require thinking out side the box to beable to do that.
