Are you responsible for facilities and operations at your science center or
museums? For visitor
services?

If so, you should consider attending one of only two remaining Accessible
Practices
workshops ASTC is co hosting that focus on better welcoming and
accommodating people with disabilities, their families, and friends.

Cost is $35 for first attendee; $25 each for two more (we encourage teams!).
Let me give you those dates, contact info, and some web pages that could
tell you more about what takes place.
And finally, what's happening for those of you repsonsible for planning,
designing, and fabricating exhibits.

Accessible Practices Workshops focusing on facilities and visitor services:
September 14, 2001
St. Louis Science Center
Contact Elana Yellen for brochure; she's at 314-289-4426; [log in to unmask]

November 2, 2001
Science Museum of Minnesota
Contact Renee Rude for brochure; she's at 651-221-4558; [log in to unmask]

Participants (there have been four workshops so far) have told us that these
workshops are practical, informative, and allow them to meet and work with
people with various disabilities. They practice doing an access inventory
and writing an access plan (each institution should have one). They network.
The food is good. The binder is packed full of useful information.

The photo album of the workshop last September at the North Carolina Museum
of Life and Science provides a pretty accurate picture of what you can
expect. Go to
http://www.astc.org/resource/access/workshop/sep2000.htm

Also for your information, there are four workshops focusing on exhibits
planned for next year. To attend the one cohosted by the Carnegie Science
Center on August 23-24, you will have to act quickly (email
[log in to unmask] or call me).

For a calendar of future workshops focusing on exhibits, go to
http://www.astc.org/resource/access/workshop/calendar.htm.

Hope to see you at one of these workshops!

Don't miss Grossology: The [Impolite] Science of the Human Body, showing
now through Labor Day. This crazy, over-the-top exhibit is the perfect way
to learn about how your body works and why it makes all the mushy, sticky,
scaly things so many people think are gross! Call (651)221-9444 for more
information.
