Mackenzie,

I would suggest that you check AVISO, the job listing for the American
Association of Museums (www.aam.org). I would also check the websites for
the museums and galleries you are interested in working with in the Boston
area, for they often post open job positions. And check the archives of
MUSEUM-L for the sage advice given by many of your fellow colleagues here.
If you are having difficulty finding something in the larger institutions,
try looking at smaller museums, commerical and non-profit galleries, and
auction houses. The position may not be glamourous, and the pay may not be
great, but you would still be gaining valuable experience and making those
necessary contacts. The last resort would be to find ANY job, and volunteer
in the evenings and on weekends. That's exactly what I had to do for about
3 years after receiving my BA in art history and art studio, working a
full-time day job and volunteering as many hours as I could squeeze into my
schedule for a large variety of different organizations. And believe me,
that time paid off because I was hired for an entry-level part-time
position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York while still in
graduate school, based almost solely on my record of volunteer work and the
great contacts I had made. That part-time position has since turned into a
full-time position. The more flexible you are, and the more creative you
can be in your job search, the better chance you have of finding a great
position. If you are looking strictly for curatorial positions, you may be
disappointed to find that many of those positions require a Ph.D, or a MA
with many years of experience. Have you considered something in Education,
Development or Collections Management?

Good luck!
