THE VLATADON INITIATIVE-

RECONCILIATION AND PEACE IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE

Project: Conference on Southeast Europe - Module 2
Title: Changing the teaching Culture About the Balkans

Introduction:
The Vlatadon initiative is an organization created by the Liaison Office of
the Orthodox Church to the E.U. Its aim it to coordinate the Implementation
of an Action Plan, which encourages, through different means, cooperation
between religious communities and communication between peoples. The
Vlatadon Initiative promotes the reconciliation and peace in Southeast
Europe and the contribution of the religious communities towards
multi-ethnic and democratic societies.
This project is the second phase of a four-step framework that comprises:
1. a media project
2. an educational project
3. a policy partnership project
4. an inter-religious training project

The concept of the project is built on the results of the High Level
Conference on S.E.E., organized in Thessaloniki, Greece last May by the
Ecumenical Patriarchate through the services of the L.O.O.C. to the E.U.
with the representatives of the religious communities of the S.E.E., along
with the representatives of the European Union, NATO, OSCEODIHR and regional
governments.

Aim of the project:
This project has set itself the objective of promoting reconciliation and
taking advantage of the opportunities provided by teaching about the Balkans
in schools throughout Europe. Prejudices and misperceptions about South
East Europe have become entrenched and negative images about the Balkans
institutionalized throughout educational systems. In such a context, the
project shall seek to enhance the understanding of teachers and curriculum
developers of the religious communities in South East Europe and will
address the historical, cultural, linguistic and religious particularities
of the region.

Content of project:
¨ Recording of discriminatory practice in teaching about the Balkans
¨ Building motivation and changing attitudes
¨ Empowering curriculum developers to become agents of change
¨ Training teachers to become cultural mediators
¨ Intercultural training for religious leaders
¨ Inter-faith information action

Technicalities of the Conference

Date of Venue: 9-11 September 2001
