"Cultural Tourism: Global Perspectives/Local Strategies" April 30 - May 5,
2001

Just as increasing numbers of travelers are seeking distinctive heritage,
arts, and cultural experiences worldwide, so culture, arts, and tourism are
emerging as key factors in transitional economies. In this dynamic
environment, the mutual benefits of planned and partnered approaches to
cultural tourism development have become a strategic imperative.

In this course you will work with participants from both sectors as you
develop your ability to:

* recognize tourism as a local and global phenomenon
* identify global and local tourism market trends
* relate the rise of cultural tourism to community and regional development
* evaluate emerging demographic realities in the marketplace
* identify and develop cultural, arts, and heritage resources that have both
local and widespread appeal for tourism
* identify key factors that make cultural tourism products "exportable"
* balance issues of integrity, authenticity, and preservation with issues of
marketing and public accessibility
* build community support for cultural tourism initiatives
* develop partnerships among tourism, arts, and cultural agencies
* plan, manage, and evaluate cultural tourism initiatives and strategies
* recognize issues and opportunities that cultural tourism holds for
indigenous peoples
