Hello--
        Why not combine academic study and immersion?  The AF has programs
in France, and there are many other such programs run by other
organizations.  Otherwise, just take a beginning course, so you'll know
about the grammar and learn some idioms, and then go.  But you'll have to
be careful not to fall into ex-pat society.  And work on your accent so
you won't sound like Jean Seberg in "Breathless."  Supposedly that's the
way she really spoke French and she was always unhappy that although she
lived in France for many years she never properly learned the language.
