LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:
"Strategies for Success: Business Planning and Financial Management"
Offered May 7 - 12 through the Cultural Resource Management Program,
University of Victoria

A springboard for the creative work of museums and other cultural agencies
is shrewd business planning and sound financial management. This lively and
interactive course stresses the central role of business and financial
planning, and develops your management abilities through a practical
examination of:
o       the nature and values of museums and other non-profit cultural
organizations 
o       business planning as a framework for setting goals, priorities, and
strategies
o       issues of revenue expectations, stability, growth, and change
o       financial management cycles, budgeting and resource allocation 
o       forecasting revenues and expenditures 
o       internal controls, evaluation and audit 
o       legal and ethical issues 
As you should be familiar with basic bookkeeping concepts, this topic is
addressed through advance readings.

Instructor: Pauline Thompson is a Chartered Accountant and Chief Executive
Officer of the Vancouver Museum
Dates: May 7 - 12 plus a preparatory assignment
Please register by: April 11 (late registrations accepted if space permits)
Fee: $589 Canadian (approx. $380 USD, credit and non-credit options) 
Travel: Victoria is easily accessible from Seattle and Vancouver 
Accommodation: Program staff are pleased to provide information on local
B&B, hotel, and on-campus options  -- some options as low as $25 CAD/night!

DRAFT OUTLINE SUMMARY: 

Day 1 Overview and Management Overview

This day presents an overview of the course and provides the participant
with the broad purpose of the management, a background to the legal and
historical nature of organizations in the cultural sector and approaches to
planning. Differences between financial and managerial accounting are
discussed. Topics include:
· Introductions and Course Overview
· Evolution And Nature Of Management 
· Profile And Skills Of Managers 
· Impact Of Environments On Organizations
· Language And Tools For Management

Day 2 Planning: The Process and the Business Plan

Most business failures appear to result from inadequate planning. If the
future conditions within which the organization will operate are detailed
through the development of a formal plan countless pitfalls can be avoided.
The mission of the organization is the foundation on which the strategic and
operational plans are built through expression in measurable, obtainable
actions. The general concepts reviewed during the previous unit begin to
reveal themselves in detailed plans. Topics include:
· the planning process: objectives, assessment, options, implementation
· types of plans: strategic, business, operational
· strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats
· the business plan - key parts of the business plan

Day 3 Frameworks of Control

The frameworks of control will be examined and will direct the attention of
the participant to the economic climate in which they operate. Organizing
for results and understanding the formal, functional and social systems of
organizations will be discussed. We will explore ways to improve budgeted
performance by boosting the bottom line, expanding revenue and using
resources effectively. This is an opportunity to examine how your
organization is performing division to division and in comparison to other
similar organizations. Topics include:
· Leadership, Communication And Organization
· Decisions, Decisions
· Benchmark Financial Data
· Management Reporting Systems

Day 4  Organizing and Expressing Information

Participants will explore the multitude of options available to a financial
manager to organize resources and express information. The art of describing
a financial situation can be very creative however the implications of
reporting information in particular ways must be understood and there are
many "rules" that should be followed. This section will examine capital
costs, various budgeting systems and cash flows. Topics include:
· Organizing For Results
· Budget Systems
· Cash Flow
· Cost Containment

Day 5 Revenue Opportunities / Financial Management Information Systems

This day will explore the revenue opportunities that are "earned" through
the marriage of the goals of the organization with the charitable choices of
the public and the marketing goals of the private sector. We will also focus
on the areas of financial management information systems of reporting,
control and processing systems. Topics include
· Fundraising And Sponsorship 
· Diversifying Revenue:Entrepreneurs Vs Managers
· Inventory And Asset Control
· Current Accounting Issues

Day 6 Legal and Ethical Issues

The final day returns to the general business case and explores some legal
and ethical issues that arise in the life of an organization. Topics
include:
· Integrating Management Styles
· Legal/Ethical Issues
· Open For Review
· Evaluation
