I work in a collection that contains many 20th century plastic
artifacts. One of these objects is a circa 1980 refrigerator that is
no longer plugged in/running, but sits in the kitchen on our tour
route. Some of the plastic components inside the fridge are producing
a vinyl-type smell. Once a week we leave the doors open for a day to
let the odor dissipate and we've tried using charcoal to help absorb
some of the off-gassing. I'm curious if anyone has information about
the types of plastics used in mid to late 20th century appliances
(vinyl??) and what we can do to help minimize the effects of the
off-gassing to the other parts of the fridge's interior.

     Thanks,
