I agree - too much negative.
I had interned at Smithsonian and at the Phillips Collections while I was
an undergrad. When I graduated with my BA (and I was also certifed to
teach elementary school), I worked at the South Street Seaport Museum in
their children's center (on weekends), the Frick Collection selling tickets
and in their gift shop AND an internship two days a week at the Guggenheim.
It was the Guggenheim that eventually hired me, first part-time doing
development work for their education programs, then as an assistant in the
new Education Department and by the time I left I was the first Education
Program Manager in charge of all public programs at the Museum. I also got
my Masters from Bank Street part time while I was working at the Guggenheim
(I do think this degree was worth it). I now work as a Museum Educaton
Specialist design exhibitions for museums all over the country for Lee H.
Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership.
Given, I worked my tail off and I was really tired a lot, but this is
something I really wanted to do. I wanted to put this out an example of
hard work paying off because I think that there are times when it really
does. I am very happy to e-mail with people looking for jobs in the NYC
area. I've worked at a few museums so I know a few people. =)
