HEAD OF COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT

The Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission has opened an examination
program for the Head of Collections Management, a full-time position at the
State Museum of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum
Commission, Harrisburg, Pa.  The list from this examination will be used to
fill this vacancy immediately, and applicants are urged to apply as quickly
as possible.  The examination consists of rating of experience and
training. MINIMUM SALARY:  $39,785

This professional, civil service position is responsible for supervising,
coordinating, and implementing state-wide museum registration activities in
accordance with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC)
policies and procedures and high professional standards. This position
oversees the legal acquisition, cataloguing, inventorying, condition
surveys, and insuring of approximately 2,200,000 objects in the permanent
collections at The State Museum of Pennsylvania and all other PHMC sites
and museums. This position also oversees loans of objects to and from all
PHMC sites and museums, and deaccessioning objects from PHMC collections.
This position coordinates planning, implementation and administration of a
computerized data management system for tracking and documenting objects in
these collections, and entering data from collections records into the data
management system. In addition, this position oversees the shipping,
packing and crating of PHMC objects. It also supervises photography and
reproduction of objects at The State Museum of Pennsylvania. Duties also
include providing professional and technical advice regarding collections
management to PHMC staff, and developing effective working relationships
with public and private groups and individuals concerned with the PHMC’s
collections management activities.

Minimum Education and Training Requirements:  Two years of experience as a
registrar or collections manager responsible for management of collections
in one or more of the following fields: decorative arts, fine arts,
history, history of science, industry and technology, archaeology,
paleontology, geology, zoology, and botany; and a master’s degree in
American history, American studies, history of fine arts, museum studies or
related field, which has included or been supplemented by either a museum
studies course at the graduate level, or a museum internship; or any
equivalent combination of experience and training which would afford the
applicant the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
