The "heat and smoke effect" can be made with a simple humidifier unit.  What
scale are you looking for? These wet solutions are possible but are going to
be fairly expensive to fabricate and maintain over time.  I have had
experience fabricating rocks and aquarium enviroments using hydrolic
cements, epoxies, and resins of different varieties.  The trick is
maintanence, it is fairly easy to make it look and work great when new.
