See also article in New York Times, Friday, March 2, page A9, which quotes de Montebello.  "We deplore the destruction of major examples of the world's cultural heitage.  We, the Metropolitan, would be prepared to come with experts at our own cost and, in collaboration with them,
take pieces that are abviously portable and preserve them in the Met."  Yet what can be done to protect the giant statues of Buddha?
