Museums Security News reprted the proposed sale...

As much as the Met wants to save these very important sculptures from
destruction, there are two problems that have not been acknowledged-
that this action might turn into a string of "hostages"- a Gilbert
Stuart painting of George Washington is already in that situation for
$20 million or it will be sold on the auction block.  How many more
sites will be ransomed?

The other problem is that the Taliban, who seem to not be interested in
the sale, perhaps for better, might use the money to buy more weapons
and such supplies.  They certainly are not interested in helping the
economy let alone the refugees or the well-being of the people of that
country.

I wonder if we are witnessing something very similar to what happened in

Europe some 60 or 70 years ago...
