First Person Interpreter Needed
Thornton W. Burgess Society
East Sandwich, MA

Outgoing, detail-oriented individual needed to play the role of Thornton W.
Burgess (1874-1965), children’s author, naturalist, and Sandwich
native. “Mr. Burgess” will lead visitors on a 1.4-mile walking tour of
Victorian Sandwich, sharing stories of his family, friends, and childhood
experiences. Following the tour, “Mr. Burgess” will meet with visitors in
the gallery at the Thornton W. Burgess Museum on Water Street in Sandwich.

This first-person interpretive program is scheduled for Thursday mornings,
beginning May 31st and ending August 30th, 2001. Mr. Burgess can be a
white male of any age between 18 and 70. He was a tall, soft-spoken man
with a wicked sense of humor, eager to advance in his career as a writer.
As a child, Mr. Burgess lost his father to consumption, an experience that
had a lot to do in shaping his life and character. He and his mother
became very close. He became self-sufficient and careful of money. His
odd jobs frequently took him to the countryside surrounding Sandwich
village – to the settings that would one day provide the inspiration for
his animal adventure stories.

The position pays $9.00 per hour. Background materials, training, and
wardrobe will be provided. To apply, send a resume to:
