Robin said:  "...still want to appear to have all the answers for their tours..."  and hit the nail on the head IMHO.  My observation is that much of the "invented" information tour guides offer is stuff they made up or heard from visitors to explain things the don't know about.  Training tour guides to say "I don't know the answer to that question, but ask me again the next time you're here and I will." is useful.  Giving them a source to look up information in or to ask questions of, and then actually getting them answers to their questions, helps a lot.
