I've tried to stay tactfully out of this but I will succumb.
When I started here, the advisory board asked that I do what I could to see
that the city (we are municipally owned and operated) stop claiming Butch
Cassidy spent his first night in jail in our building. I managed to keep a
lid on it for about five years. Then local officials with more power by far
than I began advertising the "fakelore." When the fact was pointed out to
the official, I was told that he knew it wasn't true but thought that it
would draw tourists. The advertising has persisted.
We handle it by explaining the truth as we know it.
Additionally, the myth that the "International Night" celebrations of the
1920s were unique to our community is also treasured. Again, I simply
interject what I do know about the subject.
We do have our speculative side but we do our best to tell people that it is
speculative.
