OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF JOB (USE PARAGRAPH FORMAT):

Serves as Visitor Services Representative in the National Museum of Health
and Medicine, which supports the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.  Has
responsibility for opening and closing the museum, staffing the Information
Desk, providing customer service to visitors, monitoring museum appearance
and supporting other museum departments.  Provides accurate information to
Museum visitors in a friendly and appropriate manner.  Outlines Museum
activities, provides orientation information about the galleries, and
provide directional services (e.g., bathroom, public telephone, taxi, food
service, etc.).  Collects and dispense tickets for limited access events,
and account for funds when needed.  Initiate films and programs (when
appropriate) and other visitor activated services.  Answers the Museum's
central telephone lines promptly, answer inquiries courteously, and direct
callers to appropriate staff offices and individuals as needed.  Informs
visitors with children of age appropriate activities within the Museum.
Works with visitors to interpret selected exhibits and artifacts.  Directs
those with inquiries to appropriate staff or volunteers.  Staffs the
Discovery Carts and any other demonstrations or activity areas when
assigned.  Assists docents, Discovery Cart interpreters, and staff as needed
in their efforts to conduct educational activities within the galleries and
auditorium.  Observes individuals entering the Museum entrance and report
any irregularities to the AFIP CQ and WRAMC Provost Marshal.  Assists
visitors to obtain parking passes and ensure that they park in designate
spots.  Maintain decorum in the galleries and public spaces of the Museum.
Reports unusual activities to the Facilities/Special Events Manager or
available management.  Accompany any and all unguided groups on the gallery
floor in a supervisory capacity.  Initiates gallery computer systems and
routinely monitor their functioning during public hours; report malfunctions
to the Facilities/Special Events Manager.  Respond to emergency needs by
monitoring status of facilities and taking steps to reduce or eliminate
personal risk to visitors, in accordance with Visitor Services training.
Report all emergency situations to appropriate management staff.   Assist
with clerical duties, which may be performed at the Information Desk for
other Museum departments, as assigned from the Facilities/Special Events
Manager or Administrator.   Assists in the operation of the Museum Gift
Shop, as needed.




MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (USE BULLET FORMAT):
        Include how many people report to and are evaluated by incumbent,

        *       Staff the Museum Information Desk and answer the Museum's
central telephone lines, providing general and specific information on the
galleries, public programs and educational activities at the Museum.

        *       Provide in-gallery demonstrations and education information
to visitors and groups, as needed.

        *       Assist in the operation of the Museum Gift Shop, as needed.

        *       Provide parking passes to Museum visitors and to contact the
Provost Marshal of irregularities in the museum's parking area.

        *       Open, Close, and Secure the Museum each day.

        *       Initiate the computer systems in the Museum galleries and to
contact the Facilities/Special Events manager in the event of a malfunction.

        *       Patrol the Museum on a regular schedule (bi-hourly), to
determine smooth operation of gallery facilities, and to notify appropriate
staff of irregularities.

        *       Assist Museum staff on assigned projects.

        *       Respond to emergencies in an appropriate manner.

        *       Perform duties at the Museum within a flexible timeframe,
including weekends and evenings; performing duties at the Museum on an
emergency basis when necessary and available.



MAJOR QUALIFICATIONS :

        Education Required: High School Diploma

        Prior Experience Required:  Knowledge of computers/word processing
programs, excellent customer service skills, and excellent oral
communication shills.
