NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE PROGRAM COORDINATOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION

FUNCTION:   To expand the use of the Indian art collections by Native American visitors, increase visitation by members of Southwest tribes who live outside of New Mexico. The Coordinator is primarily responsible for the Native American use of IARC Collections and for documenting visits.  This includes the recording of all information about collections, including the creative process, from native visitors who are able to identify the work of relatives or share information concerning the cultural context of specific objects.  

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES: The Coordinator must develop a comprehensive two-year program with the Director of the IARC, create a list of contact groups from southwestern tribes, work with staff to identify individuals who would most benefit from the program and provide information about the collections.  Primary responsibilities include planning and working within a budget and coordination of the program with IARC staff.  The Heritage Program Coordinator will have primary contact with Native American scholars, artists and guests and be responsible for scheduling their travel and working with the IARC staff to provide for all hospitality arrangements.  The Coordinator will also develop standardized forms facilitating an efficient use of the collections and the recording of information offered by Native American visitors about specific objects in the collection.  He or she will also work with the Collections Manager and Administrative Assistant to incorporate this material into the catalog record.

SUPERVISION:  The Heritage Program Coordinator reports directly to the IARC Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must have or be completing a Bachelor's degree in art, art history, anthropology, history or museum studies.  (Equivalent training and experience will be considered.)  A minimum of one year's experience in a museum or cultural center, good speaking, writing and computer skills are necessary.   The Heritage Program Coordinator must also have good interaction and interpersonal skills, and be cognizant and respectful of sensitivity issues in Native American cultures.  EOE/Indian Preference, a certificate of Indian Blood must accompany the application of an individual who claims Indian preference.   DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree in one of the arts or social sciences and fluency in a Native American language.
