Gift to Fund Contemporary Art Collection

With a $5,000 gift from PHILLIPS Alaska, Inc., a subsidiary of PHILLIPS
Petroleum Company, the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository
will establish a collections acquisition fund. Proceeds will be used to
purchase art pieces for the museum’s permanent collection, particularly
the work of contemporary Alutiiq artists.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity to add the work of modern
artists to our holdings”, says Director Sven Haakanson, Jr. “While our
archaeological collections are spectacular, we have few objects
reflecting modern Alutiiq culture. We feel that it is essential to
collect this material now, so it can be preserved for future generations
and used in our gallery to illustrate the endurance and reinterpretation
of Alutiiq traditions.”

The Alutiiq Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving
and sharing the cultural traditions of the Alutiiq, a Native Alaskan
people. It is governed by representatives of Kodiak’s Alutiiq
corporations, with funding from charitable contributions, memberships,
grants and sales. The museum is located at 215 Mission Road, Suite 101
in Kodiak, Alaska. Current hours of operation are Tuesday - Friday 9-5
& Sat., 10:30 - 4:30. Telephone: 907-486-7004, Fax: 907-486-7048,
