Full-Time Position, Immediate Opening
The Japanese American National Museum is the first museum in the United
States expressly dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of
Japanese ancestry. The Museum currently seeks a full-time Cataloger to
undertake the integrated cataloging of the Museum’s diverse holdings --
manuscript and archival collections, photographs and moving images,
videotapes, oral history materials, printed works and artifacts -- and
to insure compliance with emerging standards for museum description.
Cataloging efforts will focus initially on the Museum’s diverse and
extensive holdings related to the World War II incarceration of
Japanese Americans.
Responsibilities:
* original cataloging of bibliographic and non-bibliographic materials
(3-dimensional objects, photographs, fine art, oral histories, etc.)
consistent with emerging standards for museum description.
* develop and maintain authority control using both national and locally
devised authority files
* assign classifications, where appropriate, for all materials
* assist, where appropriate, staff of the National Resource Center and
Collections in a wide variety of collections management and access
activities
* other duties as assigned
Skills and Experience Required:
Masters in Information and Library Studies from an A.L.A. accredited
institution required. Knowldege of, and experience with, AACR2,
EAD/SGML, LC and AAT subject headings, and Dewey and LC
classifications. Familiarity with Questor ARGUS prefered. 1 year of
experienced preferred, but recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
This individual should be a dynamic self-starter who works independently
but can effectively contribute to a team-based work environment.
Experience in working with volunteer staff a plus. A sensitivity to the
dynamics of a community-based organization is also desirable. Reading
knowledge of Japanese prefered. Knowledge of Japanese American history
and culture prefered. Qualified candidates from the Japanese American
community are particularly encouraged to apply.
