PROJECT MANAGER, UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA VIRTUAL MUSEUM

Museums and Collections Services (MACS) requires an energetic and
results-oriented individual to assume the challenge of managing Phase I
development of the University of Alberta Virtual Museum project. If you
excel at orchestrating, stimulating, team building, and communicating within
a creative and dynamic environment, you are the person we need.

The University of Alberta Virtual Museum - combining the full powers of the
Internet with the latest in technology - will provide new and exciting ways
to present object-based information to a variety of audiences, resulting in
enhanced public access and education. Several pathways will allow visitors
to explore specimens, artifacts, and works of art via image, text, sound and
video data. One will be able to travel through online exhibitions, explore
significant topics/unique histories/fascinating research projects, enter the
Kidzone, access resources for teachers, and much more. Whether a scholar,
student, researcher or someone with a passion for art, culture, history or
science, there will be something for everyone, locally and worldwide. Phase
I activities will include establishment of: site infrastructure/gateway; a
virtual tour of the University's 35 collections; connectivity to searchable
databases; and up to 5 virtual exhibits including the history of the
University of Alberta Museums. The launch date for Phase I of the University
of Alberta Virtual Museum is March 2001.

Working in a team-based environment, the Project Manager will report
directly to the Manager, Collections Program. Specific responsibilities will
include:
- Manage project within time and quality measurements;
- Develop, monitor and adapt project plan and schedule;
- Oversee and coordinate the daily activities of project team members
(content developers/writers, design team, web developer);
- Facilitate communication;
- Plan and organize the site launch celebrations; and
- Perform other related duties as required.

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree, with a minimum of two
years experience managing technology-related projects. Working under a tight
deadline, the incumbent will have excellent skills related to project
organization, people management, verbal and written communication, and
challenge resolution. Knowledge of new technologies (e.g., multimedia
development in an Internet environment, digital imaging, database
management) is essential, and experience managing complex projects would be
an asset. Experience working within - or an understanding of - a
museum/collection environment would be beneficial

This is a contract position until 30 June 2001, with a good possibility of
extension. The salary will be commensurate with the incumbent's experience.
Qualified individuals should submit their resume and the names of three
references by 13 October 2000 to:
