Publications Manager, AIA

The Archaeological Institute of America is seeking a new Publications
Manager to be responsible for the AIA's quarterly newsletter, the annual
Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities Bulletin, and several other
publications. This is a full-time position. Duties are explained in greater
detail below.

The ideal candidate for this position should be familiar with
archaeological practices and the AIA code of ethics. Good writing skills
with the ability to write for a popular audience is a must. An editorial or
journalism background is desirable, as is experience working with
publishing programs, such as PageMaker, Quark, and PhotoShop. An
understanding of database design and web terminology is also a plus.

The job entails good organizational skills to accomplish certain projects
within tight time frames. The applicant should anticipate regular overtime
during specific times of the year and be willing to go to the AIA's Annual
Meeting each January. The Publications Manager is also responsible for the
departmental budget and finances. He or she should feel comfortable
corresponding with a variety of people including AIA members, officers,
board members, staff at AIA headquarters, and the Archaeology and Dig
Magazine staffs in New York.

Founded in 1879, the AIA is the largest archaeological organization in
North America with 11,000 members. Its members include both professional
and avocational archaeologists. The AIA's mission is to inform the public
about archaeology and about information derived from the sound practice of
archaeology through a wide range of educational programs including
publications, lectures, and educational travel; to promote the exchange of
ideas about archaeology and scholarly information derived from archaeology
through the forum of an annual meeting and through publications, regional
lectures, symposia, the award of fellowships, and other appropriate
activities; and to represent the interests of archaeologists to
governmental bodies and other organizations concerned with archaeology.

The Publication Manager's major duties include:

AIA Newsletter
* writing, compiling, and editing articles for a 16-page quarterly newsletter
* working with voluntary reporters and local society officers to develop
articles
* corresponding with and implementing policy recommended by the Newsletter
Advisory Board
* managing all aspects of production, including design, printing & mailing

AIA Bulletin
* compiling and editing annual report
* managing all aspects of production
* managing accounts and filling claims

Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities Bulletin
* maintaining and updating database of potential contributors
* managing all aspects of production of this annual resource including
soliciting and compiling entries and dealing with the publisher

Revolving Publications
* manage the production and compilation of other general publications on an
as-needed basis.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Application deadline is November
