These are some of the potential benefits. The one that is
initially being emphasized is the utility of a dedicated museum
domain as a hallmark of authenticity. If it's in .museum, it is a
bona fide museum. If it's elsewhere you may have more to wonder
about.

If the .museum domain is taken into operation, there will be a
provisional "proof of concept" phase. During that time it would
not be advisable for any museum to relinquish its previous
designation. Once the thing is up to full speed, it will be up to
each registrant to decide whether or not to change "brands".
Nothing prevents any organization from operating in multiple
domains.

Museums with attractive and well-known domain names are unlikely
to perceive any urgent need for changing. A secondary
registration in .museum would, nonetheless, provide an additional
path to the museum's network resources, as well as the benefits
cited above.
