My elementary school in central Wisconsin was built in the 1940s, though I
attended it in the 1950s. We had a cloakroom set to the side of the
classroom, with a separating wall and a door at each end. I remember
getting in a fight in 3rd grade with another girl; we both wanted to use the
same hook for our coats. There was a shelf overhead for books, etc. Boots
went on the floor underneath. No lunchroom; we walked home for lunch.

We had no gymnasium (the class walked over to the junior high school twice a
week), and no library (walked over to the public library once a week). I
believe we may have stopped those trips when the shoveled snow piled on
either side of the sidewalk was taller than the students. Our town [Neenah]
enforced the ordinance about shoveling the sidewalks within 12 hours of the
end of each snowfall; wish Pittsburgh did the same.
