Deb--

Beyond the woodhenge reports you cite (and there are others on the topic),
for the eastern and SE US probably the best sources at the moment are
Sherrod and Rolingson's Surveyors of the Ancient Mississippi Valley (1987:
Arkansas Archaeological Survey Research Series No. 28), and Elizabeth
Benchley's article on alignments in Archaeology of Eastern North America:
Papers in Honor of Stephen Williams (1993: Mississippi Department of
Archives and History, Archaeological Report No. 25). There are some good
topical surveys in Aveni's Native American Astronomy (1977: University of
Texas Press), and then there are individual reports scattered through the
literature (e.g., Hardman's report on an "observatory" at Crystal River,
Florida, in Florida Anthropologist [1971], or Aveni's appendix to the
Fatherland Site report [1983: Mississippi Department of Archives and
History, Archaeological Report 12]). Williamson also edited
Archaeoastronomy in the Americas, (1981) which is probably worthwhile.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more specific references.

Alex

Subject: North American Archaeoastronomy sites

Hi all,

I'm trying to come up with a list of North American archaeoastronomy sites
for a lecture I'm giving in January on the subject. I've got the more
well-known ones like the Anazasi sites, Woodhenge at Cahokia and the
medicine
wheels but would like to sites in the East, if they exist. I've got Ray
Williamson's book _Living the Sky_ which is excellent but it covers mainly
the Southwest sites.

Other than the controversial "America's Stonehenge" (which I'd like to find
out more info on as well) are there are other sites in North America that
were used or have astronomical alignments, particularily in the East?

Thanks in advance!

Deb Fuller
