If you're squeamish about where this inflation valve has been, how about
rinsing it thoroughly with vodka (or scotch, depending on your tastes)
and blow it up in the traditional manner?  Or, wrap the spigot with
kleenex or masking tape before you blow it up?  Decidedly low tech
solutions, but just a thought...
