We have a historic structure, used as a museum. It is listed on the
National Register. About 30 years ago, two of its entrances were
modified. One set of double wooden doors was changed to double glass
doors. One set of double wooden doors was replaced with a single wood
door, somewhat larger than one of the original double doors, but
smaller than the 5' opening. Additionally, the original front wooden
double doors remain. All the double doors were about 2' 6" in width,
per door, for about a 5' opening.

In consultation with our accessibility people and engineers and SHPO,
a ramp was added to the north end of the building, to bring all
visitors up the ramp and through the original front wooden doors. The
visitors then proceed through the exhibits and exit out the south end
of the building, where the single door now is.

Part of our plan has been to restore this 1899 building. This would
include replacing the double glass doors and the single door with
copies of the original wooden double doors. This can be done fairly
accurately. However, our engineers say this can not be done. One
door must be 3' wide at each entrance. This leaves us with a pair of
lopsided doors, a 3' door and fill/sidelight, a 5' door, automatic
door openers, or leaving it the way it is.

Does anyone see any other options? The original front doors
apparently are fine, as they are still original. They do not have a
center vertical bar, one leaf pins at the top and bottom.

Thank you for any ideas.
