Subject: Re: Position: Exhibitions and Collections Manager

While I do not agree with any unprofessional remarks made about this
particular museum, I do think that advertising the salary is a responsible
thing to do in any job advertisement, regardless of whether it is non or
for profit.  I think that it is naïve to suggest that museum workers do not
care about money and their salary, and that if they simply want to know
what the salary is then they are branded as not being suitable for the
museum world - this reinforces the stereotype of workers in the arts who go
around and do not care at all about money.    We all know that in the
museum field we are not going to make huge salaries, but what is wrong with
wanting to know what the salary range for a position is before applying??
We all have to pay rent and live, and we all have our own personal
standards of how much that costs for each of us.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I would not apply for a job that
doesn't have the salary advertised, but doesn't everyone agree that it is a
waste of  time to get a cv and cover letter prepared and send it in, only
to find out that the position is less or equal to one's current salary?
Are we not living in the real world - do most of us not make an employment
move 99% of the time for reasons of promotion and salary?  Would 99% of us
not take a position if it meant a pay cut?

I always try to enquire about the salary prior to applying, and I do find
it annoying when employers withold that information.

<< I find everyone's commentary on this job description abuse of this
listserv and its purpose.  Please stop. >>

I do not think this is abuse at all, but rather an appropriate use of
   this
forum. As museum professionals it is imperative that we let employers
   know
what are and what are not appropriate wages, expectations and
   conditions.
Without a union, we make our own working conditions by informal social
commentary. Ignorance and lack of communication creates a situation
   where
honest and enthusiastic museum professionals can be taken advantage of
   simply
because they do not know the difference between a good and a bad deal.

Ridicule on! It's your right and acts to promote fair labor practices
   for
   all!
