My own two cents.

The MFA in my experience is a terminal degree for studio arts. The response
by one with an MFA in art history is a first for me. The MFA can also be
earned in writing and music and perhaps other artistic areas. One friend
who has an MFA and is in academia got tired of colleagues being addressed
"Dr. X" and she as "Ann" (not her real name). In meetings she requested to
be called Professor if everyone else was going to be addressed by Dr.
Seemed to work for her.

The MA is an interim degree that can lead to an MFA or a PhD.

I my experience in academia we with MFA's are almost equal to Ph.D's, no
offense intended.
