This message provides additional information on an upcoming workshop with
the Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria which
focuses on the leadership skills needed to build strong museum teams and
organizations. Dr. Sherene Suchy draws on her expertise in museum
management, executive development and cross-cultural adaptation in the
cultural and business sectors, to facilitate this timely and interactive
workshop for museum and heritage professionals who wish to develop their
management skills.

"Managing Cultural Organizations: Skills for Effective Leadership"
November 27 to December 2, 2000

Contemporary museum and heritage directors must have strong interpersonal
and self-management skills, as well as a range of business and human
resource management competencies, to provide effective leadership in times
of change. This intensive workshop enables you to assess your management
style and build your capacity to lead with passion and vision, by
strengthening your understanding of:

* leadership and management requirements in the museum and heritage sector
* behavioural change processes
* interpersonal competency development
* the connection between self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and
managerial success
skill requirements in different organizational contexts
* managing diversity
* team development and facilitation
* conflict resolution and negotiation characteristics of non-profit cultural
organizations

You should bring experience in working with people in team or supervisory
relationships and a willingness to evaluate your personal approaches to
management and leadership.

Instructor: Dr. Sherene Suchy is a consultant specializing in executive
development and cross-cultural adaptation in the cultural and business
sectors. Her doctoral research involved an international study on the
director's role in museum leadership(Australia, Canada, USA, England)and she
serves as Adjunct Lecturer in the Graduate School of Management at the
University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

Dates: November 27 to December 2 plus preparatory assignment

for the text Developing Management Skills (3rd Edition) by David A. Whetten
and Kim Cameron

OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this program, participants should be able to:

- Identify the range of leadership and management competencies required in
contemporary museums and analyze their current skill level.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of behavioral skill
learning.
- Show an increased sensitivity and understanding of self and others in
different organisational contexts.
- Understand the nature of intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies and
their relevance to managing others and meeting the needs of museum/heritage
sector stakeholders
- Plan for increased proficiency in nominated skill areas for future
development.
- Understand the ways in which leadership and self-management skills
facilitate the management of change processes, team development and conflict
resolution.

DAY 1 - Monday November 27

* Program objectives; behavioural learning model; participant introductions;
create model for  leadership effectiveness in the museum and heritage sector

* Competencies for Effective People Management
* Insight into personality type through the Myers Briggs Type Indicator;
explore impact of preferences on 'that vision thing', communication style,
decision making, and creative problem solving
* Self Management Competencies
* Using emotional intelligence for optimal leadership performance to
increase resiliance under pressure, develop interpersonal connections, and
enhance creative problem solving

DAY 2 - Tuesday November 28th

* Communication Skills for Managing Cultural Organizations
* Interpersonal communication: assertive team communication, active
listening, non-verbal skills, feedback, and diversity management
* Representing the Organisation
* Creating high impact presentations
Coaching Team Exercise

DAY 3 - Wednesday November 29th
* Managing Groups and Teams
* Introduction to the psychology of group and team development, empowering,
and delegating.
* Facilitation skills for team leaders and stages in team building
* Mid-Program Strategic Review

DAY 4 - Thursday November 30th
* Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills
* Organisational and interpersonal conflict, conflict resolution skills,
interpersonal communication.
* Introduction to the negotiation process, strategies, and interpersonal
skills

DAY 5 - Friday December 1st

* Performance Management
* Human motivation and performance, influence management, a performance
management model, coaching for performance
* Change Agent Competencies
* Change processes, organisational phases, identifying key stakeholders and
the role of change agents in enthusing, inspiring, networking and leading
change.

DAY 6 - Saturday December 2nd

* Integrating the Leadership Role
* Delivering a presentation on SMART Learning
* Goals for Leadership Development Projects
* Integrating Management & Leadership Skills
* Reviewing competency development, integrating outcomes, establishing a
personal management skills development plan
