okay,

I'm going to throw my two cents into the discussion, but I'm sure other
people will be able to add more.

My interest is medieval archaeology and so I have searched and searched for
ways to go to school in the UK and perhaps, eventually, to get a job.

So, first, getting a job. Finding a job in the UK is pretty difficult,
especially a museum job. I have english friends in the museum field who
have either given up and gone back to teaching or are still trying to find
something 5-7 years after completing their MA in museum studies. There just
isn't a lot of money for museums, anywhere, these days. As a non-EU person,
you have to have a work permit to work anywhere in the EU, including the UK.
People from the EU (such as France, Spain, etc...) can now travel to
anywhere in the EU and get a job without a work permit. The only way to
really get a work permit is to have an employer in the UK who really, really
wants you to work for them. Than they can do all the paper work and jump
through all the hoops. For instance, they must prove to the gov't that you
are the only one truly qualified to do the job and than no one in the entire
EU can do the same job. This goes for paid or unpaid, so legally, you are
unable to even volunteer without permission from the govt.

So if you're unable to volunteer than how can you get an internship. Some
places will ignore the laws. Just don't get caught at customs saying "I'm
here to work" without a work permit or you'll be on the next flight back.
One thing, if you are in school, or just getting out of school is to get a
BUNAC card. I did an internship through my school at the Museum of London
with one. BUNAC cards are good for 6 months and you can only get one in
your lifetime. The program is set up mostly for students who would like to
work in pubs or be au pairs, but it is possible to contact a museum first,
set up an internship and than get the card.

As for school in the UK, the University of Leisceter has a very good museum
studies program. It is not very hard to get a visa to study over there, but
you have to be able to prove that you can pay your tuition and that you have
enough money to live there, before they will even admit you. The difference
between a taught MA and a reading MA is that the taught one you attend
classes for a year a produce some sort of work (like a thesis). The other
MA is really just pre-PhD work, just writing, not many courses. And doing a
PhD in the UK is not something to jump into. Because they don't require a
lot of course work for their PhDs, American universities are often worried
about hiring someone to teach History 101 who hasn't taken a million history
courses themselves.

So, does that sufficently confuse everyone? That's pretty much everything I
learned from my attempts to work, study, live in the UK. Other people may
have different ideas or options to offer and I would be interested in
hearing them.
