I did an internship in my MA program which involved turning a church in
upstate New York into a Museum.  They were in very preliminary stages and I
haven't been back in 4 years, so I don't know how progress has gone.  The
Historic Registry no doubt has many buildings which were once churches but
are now museums.  California for example has a few mission churches which
are no longer in use for services, but are museums, and several are dual
purpose.
