If you find your way to western Pennsylvania you might want to plan a visit
to Altoona. The Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, Horseshoe Curve
National Historic Landmark and Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic
Site are all within 10 miles of each other. Altoona sits at the base of the
Allegheny Mountains, the first physical barrier faced by European settlers
as they moved westward. Altoona grew to be the largest railroad shop
community in the Nation by 1920. I spent a decade as Executive Director of
the Museum and Horseshoe Curve and was fortunate enough to raise and spend
$22 million on new facilities and exhibits. The Museum looks at the
railroad industry from the differing perspectives of the employee and
company and focuses on the social impacts rather than the technology.

And, if you find your way to Boston, try to stop by 129 Portland Street near
the North End. I am presently VP for Christopher Chadbourne and Associates,
a museum planning and exhibit design firm. Phone (617) 367-6777.

Travel safely.
