Having lived in a number of places (urban and non-urban) in the Mid-Atlantic
area for the past 15 years, I agree with your educator.  It is very
difficult to live for the amount of money that you listed.  Her marital
status, presence of children, where she lives, etc. have absolutely nothing
to do with what you pay her and using that as a justification for the salary
sounds downright discriminatory to me.  Instead of looking at those factors,
why don't you look at competitive salaries for comparative experience and
job duties for the region and use that to base your decision.
