Hi there,
As a left handed museum professional, I'm obviously interested in this
subject. While I was studying for my MA my tutor suggested I went to see the
learning support unit as he thought I might have low level dyslexia. I was
curious so I went.
The womam there said that left handed people tend to be more dyslexic than
righthanded as they have to use the right side of the brian to control their
writing (when language is based in the left side.) As a consequence they
have to process the information more and sometimes it gets a bit scrambled
on it's journey round the brain. But this isn't always diagnosed as dyslexia
exists on a continuum from very mild to very extreme, and people work out
ways of dealing with it. For this reason it is quite common for people doing
postgrad degrees to be diagnosed for the first time at that lelvel - being
intelligent they have been able to solve their problems. Dyslexia has
nothing to do with cleverness or stupidity or anything like that though.
Sh also added that because of the increased use of the right side of the
brain, which is the home of spatial and 3d thought, lefties are often
particularly good at that. In university terms, they often show up doing
archichture, engineering, archaeology - and museum studies!
This was born out in my experiences. From a group of 21 people doing the
history curator's option, 7 of us were lefties!
Best wishes,
Jane
