Hi Hildy,
Our website may be of assistance to you-- www.si.edu/cms; There's a good article posted called "Museum Careers in the Next Millennium" by Beverly Sheppard & Patricia Williams (CMS Bulletin Vol. 7, No. 1 January 2000). Also if you send me your mailing address, I can mail some museum studies information to you that's not posted there yet (to bulky to post here!). A good new book out regarding public history and historic house museums is "Domesticating History" by Patricia West (SI Press 1999).

>>I graduated this past May from Rutgers Universuty with a BA in History. I
would like to do graduate study in History with Museum studies. I know NYU
offers a program, but I heard there is another school in the Philadelphia
area that does too. Does anyone know of any schools other than NYU that
offers Museum studies? Also, any suggestions on getting employment in a
museum now, while I work towards my MA?

Anyone investigating future educational possibilities should not overlook
programs in "public history" as opposed to "museum studies." Public history
programs provide students not only with coursework and hands on
opportunities in museums, but also in the related fields of historical
editing, archives administration, community history, oral history, etc.,
etc.
History departments at Kent State University, New Mexico State University,
and Murray State University all currently house public history programs.

Hildy--Duquesne University in Pittsburgh has an MA in history with museum
studies. I've had several interns from their program, and they've all been
good.
