Dear Susan:
The curatorial staff here went to see the Bowers Museum's display of the
"Secret World of the Forbidden City: Splendors from China's Imperial
Palace." They had a GREAT AUDIO TOUR. Sure it's not an outdoor museum,
but the audio tour was fantastic. They still had docents there giving
school tours. The combination of a live person speaking about the
artifacts, and then listening to the various history lessons given on the
MP3 player was very valuable to me, as I learned more about what I was
looking at. The audio guide had a Family tour as well as the Adult tour.
So children's voices in the family tour made it ideal for kids to listen
to, and the content was markedly different from the Adult tour (I
listened to both!).
Regarding visitor interaction, the audio tour lets you go at your own
pace; if you want to make commentary with friends and family while
visiting then take the headphones off, make your comments, and continue
on; you must allow enough time for your visit to the exhbition so that
you can absorb both audio guide, and allow for your own personal time.
If you don't have enough time to spend in the display hall, then don't
take the audio tour.
How successful would an an audio guide be? I guess it all depends on who
writes the script, who narrates, and how it all gets put together. I'd
vote for MP3 players as they are very easy to work with and weighed
nothing (sound quality was excellent). Also, if you don't have staff
members to administer the audio tour, get the company who put it together
to help you with that. If you have any other specific questions, send me
a note directly as recently I put in a little time to research pricing
and needs required for an audio guide production here at the Library.
