Seems to me one option would be for those staff and managers who feel
underpaid to actively pursue grant monies for their museum to free up
general operating funds for their work. I am sure directors would approve so
long as the museum continues to operate effectively. But that is just my 2
cents of creative brainstorming.

here's a suggestion for y'all to shoot at: if budgets for museum salaries
are considered to be 'capped,' such that staff either have to make not
enough money or work too hard, can't the problem come off a little at the
other end? if pay is not commensurate with required degrees and experience,
maybe the requirements should be adjusted commensurate with pay. Even if
this means a loss in standards, if the public (read, funding) could tell
the difference, maybe the value of professionalism would be acknowledged in
this as in other fields. Yes, it's an entirely backwards suggestion, but
it's at least a suggestion; I mean, this is the place to brainstorm, right?
