I would suggest calling the potential employer(s) and inquiring, if possible.
I had the same question about the writing sample required for a curatorial
internship. I had been planning to send a copy of a grad seminar paper,
but I called and it turned out that they wanted a five page sample at the
most--either a short paper, or a sample from a longer paper. (For the
reference of others seeking internships, this was for the National Gallery in
Washington.)
