"Science under Sail: Russia's Great Voyages to America, 1728-1867" opened May
4, 2000, at the Anchorage (Alaska) Museum of History and Art. The exhibition
tells the dynamic story of Russia's exploration of western North America
from California to Point Barrow, with more than 300 original artifacts,
manuscripts, maps, art, hands-on activities for young and old, and a
fascinating story. Presentation Design Group of Eugene Oregon, designed the
5,000 square foot exhibit with several recreated environments, including a
rocking-rolling ship's cabin and a shore-camp with an actual Russian
shliupka (shore boat) on the "beach." A 200-page Instructional Guide for
Teachers of 4-8 grade and a fully illustrated exhibition catalog accompany
the exhibition. The Guest Curator is Barbara Sweetland Smith, who has
organized two other Russian-theme exhibits that toured nationally for the
Anchorage Museum.
