Kumi:

Your friend may want to first consult basic biographical reference books
such as the following:

Benezit, Emmanuel.

Jahrhunderts / [Datenverarbeitung,
Andreas Klimt , Mathias Wundisch]. Munchen : K.G. Saur ; Leipzig : E.A.
Seemann, 1996

Then, check your school's art library. You will probably be able to find
the following book and a videotape:

Frances Anne Hopkins, 1838-1919 : Canadian scenery = le paysage canadien /
by Janet E. Clark, Robert H. Stacey. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the
Thunder Bay Art Gallery, 27 January-18 March 1990, and travelling to other
galleries. Thunder Bay, Ont. : Thunder Bay Art Gallery, 1989.

The petticoat expeditions [videorecording] / [presented by] the National
Film Board of Canada ; producer, Kent Martin ; directed and written by
Pepita Ferrari. 1 videocassette (52 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences ;
1/2 in.
Montreal, Quebec : National Film Board of Canada, c1997. ("Recounts the
captivating stories of three British women whose pioneering spirits led them
to travel in 19th-century Canada")

Always check what is available on the internet as well.
http://collections.ic.gc.ca/heirloom_series/volume5/292-295.htm . In
addition to a general search, museums collecting the artist's work often has
some info. on the web. For example, in this case, the Glenbow Museum in
Alberta and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
