Yes, experience is very important.  I am in the Public History program at
Murray State and we do a major project in every public history course.  The
projects are very fun, we gain real experience, the projects are real not
just concepts on paper, and we do them for museums that need help in various
areas.  I think most important we build strong relationships with others in
the program.

If you are looking for a program then you should look for one that offers
many hands-on experiences.  If you are currently in a program and are not
doing hands on projects you should insist that your instructors provide
them.  There are many non-profits looking for extra help.
