Museum Director


SUMMARY

The EAA AirVenture Museum is a worldclass showcase for aviation heritage and
the spirit of personal flight advanced by the Experimental Aircraft
Association.  Co-located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with EAA Headquarters and the
EAA AirVenture Fly-in Convention, it is one of few institutions of its kind
accredited by the American Association of Museums.  It is also unique among
aviation museums for extraordinary assets which bring its collections to
life:  a worldwide network of EAA members, chapters and fly-in events; new
youth education facilities to extend a spectrum of outreach activities;
flying aircraft which operate throughout the United States and at the
museum's adjoining Pioneer Airport complex; and the annual EAA AirVenture
Oshkosh Fly-in Convention each summer.  The museum supports and benefits
from all these activities, and from all EAA Headquarters operations.  With
lead responsibility for the continued growth and development of the
AirVenture Museum, specific activities of the Museum Director fall into
three broad categories.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collections Management Responsibilities
*       Develop aircraft and artifact collection to represent the spectrum
of interests within recreational aviation and complement the mission of the
EAA Aviation Foundation
*       Evaluate prospective donations with regard to their value to EAA and
aviation history, as well as their appropriateness to the EAA AirVenture
Museum collection
*       Lead efforts for disposition of aircraft and artifacts not needed
for present or planned purposes
*       Provide leadership to maintain professional standards of
preservation/conservation/
restoration
*       Assure proper accountability and maintain all records and related
correspondence regarding collections

Exhibitions Responsibilities

*       Espouse an exhibition philosophy to exceed visitor expectations from
the moment they walk in the door
*       Plan or direct creative efforts which engage the visitor in an
ever-changing spectrum of aviation exhibits which educate, as well as
entertain
*       Complete "Hangar X" youth gallery
*       Plan/oversee three or more new exhibits annually
*       Enhance several aircraft exhibits annually with interpretive
elements which add to the educational experience of museum visitors
*       Rotate several exhibits annually to add fresh perspective and
balance for return visitations
*       Proactively seek to increase museum attendance, both from the region
as well as the national tourist market, within reasonable budgetary
guidelines
*       Develop outreach impact through traveling exhibits and displays
which carry the museum's mission
*       Plan and implement special programs and activities which enrich the
museum experience, e.g. art competitions, speakers' series, weekend events,
etc.

Operations Responsibilities

*       Prepare appropriate budgets and plans for museum operations and
administer activities within them
*       Work with senior management as appropriate to represent museum role
in strategic corporate plans
*       Supervise all Museum Department personnel and continue professional
development underway
*       Oversee museum admissions policies and procedures and coordinate
special events' requirements with all appropriate staff
*       Develop agenda and input for the EAA Aviation Foundation Board and
Committees such as the Museum and Aircraft Operations Committee
*       Oversee museum special events


QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactory.  The requirements listed are representative of
the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations

*       Must have broad knowledge of the men, women and machines of
aviation--including antiques, classics, homebuilts and warbirds--to include
an understanding of their significance to society
*       Must have management and administrative capability, with high energy
and interpersonal skills to deal with museum visitors, volunteers, staff
members, donors and EAA members
*       Must have budget and planning experience
*       Should have experience in marketing in order to support museum
attendance goals
*       College or advanced degree
*       Highly desirable:  knowledge of museum operations and experience
with nonprofit organizations to include fundraising
*       Highly desirable:  computer capability and familiarity with basic
MIS functions
*       Highly desirable:  FAA Airman Certificate (pilot or mechanic)

RELATIONSHIPS

*       Report to the Executive Vice President of the EAA Aviation
Foundation
*       Supervise the Registrar, Collections Manager, Library/Archives
Manager, Curator, Docents & Events Coordinator, Restoration Shop Supervisor
*       Develop agenda and input for Committees such as the Museum and
Aircraft Operations Committee of the EAA Aviation Foundation's Board of
Directors
*       Maintain close liaison with other EAA/Foundation departments
including Development, Education, Marketing, Aircraft Operations and
Convention.  The Museum Department works on a daily basis with these and
other departments including Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing,
Audio-Visual, MIS, Editorial, Purchasing and Facilities Maintenance.
