Dear Roger,

We, too, are a small museum. Dover Publishers $1 books for children are
always a good seller. There are a limited number of titles directly related
to history, but Dover offers a "Cash Order Plan" in which you can order small
quantities (under $50 net, with a 40% discount), and pay no shipping.

If you plan to have a lot of children and school groups visit the museum,
you'll want to stock a variety of lower-priced items. We have good luck with
old-fashioned toys (wooden yo-yos, tops, popguns, etc., metal jacks, marbles,
and the like). Be careful, though, of the "cheesy" packaging often used by
some of the inexpensive vendors (Fun Express, Kipp Brothers, Rhode Island
Novelty Company, and the like), which ruins the historic flavor. We
sometimes have to re-package such items ourselves. Old-fashioned candy
(stick candy, rock candy, lollipops) is also a hit.

Also, books related to local, regional, and state history are a must. Many
people look to their local history museum to carry such publications.

Best of luck with the new museum!
