I plan to attend the upcoming Museums and the Web conference in Minneapolis
next month, so could meet with candidates there. A brief description of the
work of the consultant follows. Dates given are not set in stone.

We plan to select a museum technology consultant by July 1. Over the summer,
we will furnish the consultant with background information on the Gallery,
the status of our current technology, and the results from technology
planning to date. In September, we will bring the consultant to the Gallery
for five days, during which time he or she will tour the facilities and
learn more about our programs and community services.

Part of the consultant's work will be to review ways the Gallery currently
delivers object content and educational products through technology, and how
such delivery is supported by network infrastructure, applications, and
staffing. Existing systems include:
* The EmbARK collections management system (funded by a grant from
NYSCA)
*       The Gallery's web site (http://www.rochester.edu/MAG)
*       Odyssey Online (http://www.emory.edu/CARLOS/ODYSSEY/), a
collaborative website between the Gallery and Emory University' s Michael C.
Carlos Museum that won the "Best Educational Website" at the international
Museums and the Web '98 conference.
* Destination IMAGination, an interactive CD-ROM that the Gallery has
distributed to area schools.

The consultant will meet with key staff to discuss strategies for moving the
Gallery forward, identifying projects that will make the most immediate
impact with resources available, and projects that will enable long-range
continued development. Potential projects might include:
* Implementing web access to the EmbARK collections management
database
* Developing an online database of educational resources that links to
the collections management database
* Enhancing web access to Gallery objects through the use of
standards-based META tagging in the web interface.
* Sharing images through AMICO or other licensing initiatives, and
exploiting their revenue potential.
* Developing additional CD-ROM and web-based educational products, and
expanding online products directed toward teachers.
* Recycling existing educational products (catalogs, exhibit guides,
slides, etc.) into the digital environment.
* Developing general and exhibition-specific kiosks.
* Develop facilities, equipment and staffing to support distance
learning projects.

The consultant will identify the impact of these and other potential
projects upon infrastructure, applications and staffing. By December, he or
she will prepare and present a report to the Board of Managers' Technology
Committee summarizing findings, identifying models in other institutions and
strategies for funding, and recommending future action.
