THE UPPER MIDWEST CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES
TWO UPCOMING CONSERVATION WORKSHOPS

WE CAN WORK IT OUT: THE PRESERVATION OF PRINT AND NEGATIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC
COLLECTIONS
June 1-2, 2000 at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, Minnesota

This workshop will address the identification, deterioration, and
preservation of photographic print and negative materials commonly held in
museums, libraries, and archives. An emphasis will be placed on the
development of short and long term preservation strategies including disaster
response and recovery methods for these challenging and often vulnerable
materials. Original print and negative materials, slides and case studies
will be utilized. The speaker for this two day workshop is Debbie Hess Norris
, who is internationally recognized as one of the top experts in photographic
conservation. She is currently the Director of the Winterthur/University of
Delaware Art Conservation Program and is an Associate Professor. She has
written numerous articles on the subject of photographic conservation for
international publications and has lectured and presented courses on the
topic at major conferences, museums, and universities around the world.

IDEAL CONDITIONS? PREVENTATIVE CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING FOR
MUSEUMS, LIBRARIES, AND ARCHIVES
July 28-29, 2000 at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, Minnesota

During the first day of this two day workshop, participants will be actively
involved in discussing preventative conservation actions relating to
temperature, humidity, light, pests, exhibits, storage and loans. Discussion
will focus on practical field techniques used at Shelburne Museum. A special
section will emphasize low-cost, practical, climate control approaches for
museums that are closed during the winter months. The second day will focus
on how to establish a monitoring program for environmental conditions.
Practical methods to monitor humidity, temperature, lighting, particulates,
gaseous contamination, and collection safety will be discussed along with
suggested equipment and practical field techniques. The speaker for day one
is Richard L. Kirschner, the Director of Preservation and Conservation at
Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. He is a noted consultant, lecturer,
and author in the conservation field, and much of his research has
concentrated on practical low-cost approaches to dealing with environmental
conditions in historic structures during winter months. Day two's speaker, Wi
lliam P. Lull, is a noted consultant, lecturer and author in the field of
conservation environments for museums, libraries and archives. He is the
President of Garrison/Lull Inc. and has consulted with museums throughout the
world on environmental issues. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of
Building Technology at New York University.
