The Chicago Academy of Sciences is Chicago’s first Museum and a leader in
science and environmental education.  The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is
the Academy’s state-of-the-art science and education center and its
cornerstone for the Academy’s programs and activities.  Dedicated to

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s Volunteer program welcomes anyone 18
years or older.  The program offers a variety of jobs, shifts and levels of
expertise to accommodate diverse schedules and talents.  Volunteers are
involved in every exhibition, department and event that the Museum offers.
Volunteering at the Nature Museum offers a challenging and rewarding
experience: it’s a great opportunity to for volunteers to learn about our
environment, meet new people and help connect people to science through
nature.

Position Description
The Supervisor of Volunteer Programs is responsible for the management and
continuing development of the Volunteer Program.  This includes overall
responsibility for recruitment, retention, and scheduling of all volunteers
and in overseeing the training procedures for all volunteers.

Reports To
Director of Visitor Services

Primary Responsibilities
 Supervise the recruitment, retention, and training of volunteer
staff
 Develop retention plan to maintain appropriate volunteer levels of
service at the museum
 Identify and coordinate activities with various departments that
provide integral support to the volunteer function
 Supervise Volunteer Coordinator and Weekend Volunteer Coordinator
Assistant
 Identify sources for recruitment of a culturally diverse staff of
volunteers
 Develop monthly reporting structure reflecting state of the
Volunteer Department
 Perform on-going evaluations of volunteer program for effectiveness
 Create and maintain yearly department budget
 Represent the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in a professional manner

Qualifications
 College Degree required; concentration in Education, Biology.
 Minimum of two years experience in managing volunteers.
 Prior Management /Supervisory skills.
 Demonstrated ability to create and maintain effective systems;
detail oriented.
 Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
 Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
 Experience and facility with computers required.
 Demonstrated conflict resolution.

Compensation
Competitive salary commensurate with experience; benefits

Hours
Full-time; includes weekends and some evenings
