This is a touchy subject, but I am of the opinion that you should include them.

Put yourself into the shoes of the person reading the essay. This
person wants to get to know who you are and what it is different or
interesting about you. If your personal interests help set you apart,
that is a plus. But you also need to describe how that interest helps
understand who you are: Have you learned something from it? Has it
inspired you to do something? Has it led to other interests? Or, best
of all, does it tie into your professional interest?
There is also the chance that the person reading the essay shares
your interest.

I'd be interested to hear other people's take on this.
