MORITZ DANIEL OPPENHEIM
The first major exhibition of this important 19th-century German painter –
known as the "Painter of the Rothschilds and the Rothschild of Painters,"
organized by the J disches Museum Frankfurt.
Exhibition contents: 88 paintings, 14 works on paper, 1 sculpture
Space requirements: approximately 400 running feet; currently installed in
2000 sq. ft.
Costs: there is no exhibit fee; relatively low crating and shipping costs
are expected, with a very good chance of corporate or governmental sponsorship.
Lenders to the exhibition include: Kunstmuseum (D sseldorf); Hamburger
Kunsthalle (Hamburg); Thorvaldsen Museum (Copenhagen); Banque Rothschild
(Paris); National Portrait Gallery (London); Israel Museum (Jerusalem);
Jewish Museum (New York); Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles)
Publication: 419 pp., bilingual (English/German), eight essays,
approximately 200 color plates, includes an annotated checklist of more than
700 works by Oppenheim, published by Wienand Verlag, 1999.
Yeshiva University Museum will present this exhibition beginning in
January/February 2001, in its new galleries on West 16th Street in NYC. The
exhibition closes in Frankfurt in April 2000, and a venue is sought for
Summer/Fall 2000.
Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (1799-1882) received a traditional academic
painter's training in Germany and studied abroad in Paris and Rome. He was
highly influenced by the Nazarenes, and was well known for his biblical
subjects, genre paintings and portraiture. Oppenheim created masterful
works combining 19th century academism with dynamic use of color. His works
often provide a rare lens into the social, political and cultural changes of
19th century German life.
He had a close patronage relationship with the Frankfurt Rothschild family,
and was commissioned by the city of Frankfurt to paint portraits of past
Emperors for the Kaisersaal (Emperor's Hall). He is perhaps best known for
his paintings on Jewish themes, such as his The Return of the Volunteer or
his series of genre scenes of Jewish family and ritual life, later published
as print albums in German (Bilder au dem altjuedischen Familienleben, 1865)
and English (Family Scenes from Jewish Life of Former Days, 1866).
